Dog Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed. Winni is a sweet 3-year-old girl who was brought in as a stray to Waukegan Animal Control, and she’s now safe in a loving foster home with Reach. Winni is incredibly affectionate and gentle — she loves to snuggle, follow her people around the house, and flash her signature smile . She’s also very smart and a quick learner, already picking up on cues like a pro. She has fit right into her foster home with the resident dogs. Winni isn’t much of a barker and is doing great with her potty habits, even going to the door when she needs to go out. She sleeps soundly in her pen at night and relaxes there during the day while her foster is at work. This little lovebug has a heart as big as her smile. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
