Dog Breed: Unknown breed. "Sadie had found her way into the local dog pound in Marianna, AR several times before. This time her owners never came back for her. Shortly thereafter, it was discovered she was pregnant. The volunteer contacted me and asked if we had room for a pregnant dog. We quickly arranged her transport and were eager to welcome Sadie and her pups! She arrived at approximately 8:15pm on Monday September 29th. While I was getting her settled, I noticed she was having contractions! Its PUPPY TIME I suspected. I ran home, got some supplies and came back prepared for a long night! Contractions continued. Sadie was very whiny and clingy. We slept together on a kid's daycare cot most of the night. At 4am I noticed a dark discharge which I knew wasn't good. I immediately called the emergency vet. An ultrasound confirmed there was at least 1 baby. The xray showed the baby was very large, and was positioned breach. Dr Nikki said we needed to do an Emergency C Section. Dr Nikki pulled the puppy out and the two techs began working on it. After several minutes it was clear the pup did not survive. It was a girl and we named her Hope. Once Sadie had recovered from her C Section and spay surgery, I picked her up. Another long night ahead. Sadie was crying and whining in pain and suffering from the loss of her one and only baby. The outcome wasn't what we had hoped for, but it's time to concentrate on Sadie's recovery and her journey to find the perfect forever home." In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
