Dog Breed: Flat-coated Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Ava! Ava is a 10-month-old, 47 lb., spayed Flat-Coated Retriever mix with a heart full of love and plenty of playful puppy energy. She already knows how to sit and is learning recall, though leash walking isn’t her favorite just yet. Ava isn’t overly food-motivated, but she is affection-driven—when you pet her, she’ll often flop right over for belly rubs! She’s a cuddlebug who still believes she’s small enough to be held and carried around. Ava adores playtime and sometimes gets a little carried away, so continued guidance with her puppy manners will help her shine. She’s friendly with everyone she meets and usually only barks at night when she thinks she sees something. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds.
