Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Amara! Amara is an 8-month-old terrier mix weighing 19 lbs, and she’ll be arriving in NJ on 9/28 in search of her forever home. This loving, clever girl is already showing how smart and eager to please she is—she’s learned her name, comes when called, and even sits politely for a treat. Amara is working hard on her manners, doing her best to resist the urge to jump up for attention, and she’s making great progress with potty training and leash walking. At just under a year old, Amara is the perfect mix of playful puppy energy and sweet companionship. She’s ready to keep learning with a family who will guide her and cheer her on as she grows into the wonderful dog she’s meant to be. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
