Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Leilen is participating in a fee waived adoption event 10/14 - 10/18 Leilen is an anxious dog that may take time to fully open up. When spooked, she'll jump up on her trusted people in an attempt to avoid whatever it is that's scaring her, and can take a bit to fully settle again. She would likely do best with someone that can be patient and dedicated to giving her space and helping her settle in her new home environment as she adjusts. OTHER PETS: Leilen is unsure around other dogs and hasn't shown much interest in greeting or initiating play. She would prefer to be the only dog in the home, but could be open to sharing space with a dog that will co-exist around her. [Should Be Only Pet / Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Someone who has experience with timid dogs, and positive reinforcement/counterconditioning would be ideal for Leilen, in order to help her settle in her new environment and eventually build her confidence. [Some Experience] KIDS: Leilen is uncomfortable with some handling and may be a flight risk if she's spooked. She would do best in a quieter home with older children that can understand how to interact with her and when to let her have her own space. [12+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Leilen doesn't quite know how to play yet, but she is interested in chasing toys! As she settles in a new home she'll likely open up more and be more willing to engage with people in play. A combination of regular exercise and lots of mental enrichment such as games and food puzzles will help meet her needs, and taking things slow will help her build trust. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Leilen not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to feel more comfortable and confident in herself! It will provide a good opportunity for her to bond with her new owner as well. [Minimal] GROOMING: Consistent brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]
