Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed. Meet Handsome Larry! This beautiful 7-month-old hound mix weighs about 40 pounds and is as sweet as can be. Larry came all the way from Kentucky, where he and his two siblings were found in rough shape. Thanks to an amazing rescue we work with, they were nursed back to health—and now Larry has made his way to Pittsburgh, ready to find his forever home! Larry is a friendly and affectionate boy who enjoys meeting new people. He can be so sweet and loving with a big personality that shines through. He gets along wonderfully with other dogs and would love to have a canine companion to help show him the ropes. He loves playing outside, going for walks, and snuggling up with people—but his absolute favorite thing in the world is running with toys! He loves to take them from his sister and run around the back yard. Larry has been doing great with house training and rarely has accidents. He is crate trained, spending some time there during the day and sleeping soundly through the night. Like any young pup, he is still learning some manners—like keeping all four paws on the floor when excited, and occasionally getting into things he is not allowed but is eager to please and will thrive with a patient adopter willing to continue training. With his stunning good looks and sweet spirit, Larry is ready to steal your heart and become the perfect addition to your family! A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
