Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Ruby! Ruby is an almost 7 year old girl. Ruby loves kids and other dogs. But she seems to be quite the squirrel and rabbit hunter. She walks well on the leash with an easy walk harness Ruby would be best suited in a home where the humans are not gone for extended hours during the day. She’s house trained and likes her crate when the door is open. She does well for short periods of time in the crate. Ruby is getting care for some itchy skin that is likely due to poor nutrition and neglect. If you are interested in adopting Ruby contact your adoption coordinator or apply at .southeastgermanshepherdrescue. She is being fostered in the Yorktown, VA area. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrtreasurergmail .

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
