Description
Dog Breed: Shepherd / Mixed. Adoption Fee: 395. All interested people should submit an adoption application as their first step. Meet Silas! This handsome 1½-year-old hound/shepherd mix might seem a little unsure when you first meet him — but don’t be fooled! His initial shyness isn’t the real Silas. Once he checks things out and decides if you’re as nice as you look (spoiler alert: you are), you’ll see the transformation — tail wagging, eyes sparkling, and that goofy, lovable personality shining through! Silas is sweet, affectionate, and once he’s comfortable, he’s the kind of dog who will stick by your side with a happy heart. He’s a social butterfly at doggie daycare, where he loves playing like crazy with his friends. At just 35 pounds, he’s the perfect medium size — easy to snuggle, great for families, and always ready for adventure. And did we mention his stunning brindle coat? Silas isn’t just beautiful on the outside — he’s got the heart to match. He’s truly one of those dogs who just needs a little time to show you how special he really is. All pets adopted from GDHS are spayed or neutered, have vaccinations brought up to date, are on heartworm preventative (dogs), FIV/FELV tested (cats) and microchipped. The Greater Derry Humane Society does not have a physical shelter, and all visits are by appointment only.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
