Description
Dog Breed: Queensland Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Chewie, the cattle dog mix. Chewie is a shy girl who has taken some time to warm up at the Shelter. Once you are in her circle, she is pretty endearing. Chewie loves to play ball and gets really focused while playing. Chewie does occasionally do a behavior called an appeasement (or submissive) grin. This could look like her pulling her lip up to show her teeth and is typically accompanied with other social behavior of a wiggly body, tail wagging and soft facial expressions. Potential adopters should do some research on this behavior prior to adoption as it can be conflicting for new people, especially in cases where a dog is a little shy at first. Staff have observed that Chewie appears to be a bit unsure with other dogs, preferring the company of smaller than larger sized ones. If there is another dog in the home, they would be required to do a meet and greet prior to adoption to see how the two dogs jive. Otherwise, Chewie would thrive in a lower-traffic household where there are not a lot of crossing paths with dogs as that will cause him to be uncomfortable. Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
