Description
Dog Breed: Norwegian Elkhound (medium coat). Don't forget!! We are currently open by appointment only. This is to control the traffic in the building at one time. If you would like to look at the cats/dogs for adoption, or if you need to relinquish or to do any other business, please message our FB page or call us at 304-267-8389 to schedule an appointment. If you see a specific pet for adoption on our FB page we can always set up a specific meet and greet for that as well. This beautiful girl is Rane. She is a senior and is spayed and vaccinated. She is good with other dogs as long as they are gentle with her. She will chase cats, so a "cat-free" environment would be best for her. Kane is amazing to walk on a leash. She was given up because at her age, at times, she forgets to potty outside. She is extremely calm mannered and gentle. Adoption fee... $175, cash or credit card. Mon.-Sat. 10-4 We understand not everyone can adopt a pet. Some homes are full, some homes do not allow certain pets and some have lifestyles that can't handle a pet right now. You can still help. Sharing pictures on FB, volunteering, or just coming in and sponsoring part of the adoption fee for when the pet is adopted. This helps a lot. No amount is too small to donate towards the adoption fee. If you would like to help sponsor, speak to one of the staff. Especially the cats and kittens need help (since we usually have so many!) Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Overview:
The Norwegian Elkhound is a robust and ancient breed, originating in Scandinavia where it served as a versatile hunting dog, primarily for large game like moose (elk). Physically, they are distinctive with their thick, weather-resistant double coat, typically in shades of grey and black, and their medium build, weighing generally between 48-55 pounds. Their curled tail and prick ears add to their alert and intelligent appearance. Temperamentally, Elkhounds are known for being loyal, courageous, and remarkably friendly with their families, often displaying a playful and affectionate nature. While they can be excellent companions for active families, their independent streak and high energy levels mean they require consistent training and plenty of exercise; they are generally not well-suited for small apartment living without significant effort to meet their needs. Like many breeds, they can be prone to certain health conditions such as hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important for their well-being.
