Dog Breed: Boston Terrier (short coat). Meet Gus – A Sweet Senior Looking for a Loving Home Formerly known as Shadow, Gus may look familiar — and that’s because he’s already touched hearts before! This charming 12-year-old Boston Terrier first came to Boston Buddies from the OC shelter about a year ago and was quickly adopted by a loving older couple. He enjoyed a happy life filled with love and companionship. Sadly, Gus’s world changed when his beloved dad passed away and his mom’s health no longer allowed her to care for him. Now, Gus is looking for a second chance at forever — a new family who has room in their heart for a gentle, older gentleman. Gus is the definition of easygoing. He loves lounging around the house and is perfectly content with a peaceful day followed by a leisurely evening walk. He’s great on a leash (unless a cheeky squirrel crosses his path!), sleeps quietly through the night in his crate, and is fully house-trained — he even uses a doggie door like a pro. Gus gets along well with other dogs and enjoys meeting new friends on his walks. He hasn’t met any cats, but he’s very interested in the birds and squirrels in his foster home's yard — so a home without small, fast-moving critters might be best! He’s a big fan of mealtime — especially important now that he's on a special hepatic diet to support his liver health. He also has a bit of seasonal itchiness that’s easily managed with a Cytopoint shot every few months. Simply put, Gus is a sweet soul who just wants a comfy spot to nap, a kind human (or two) to love, and maybe a few tasty treats along the way. Overview:
The Boston Terrier, affectionately known as the "American Gentleman," originated in the late 19th century in Boston, Massachusetts, making it one of the few breeds developed in the U.S. Physically, they are compact and muscular, typically weighing between 12 and 25 pounds, with a distinctive "tuxedo" coat pattern—black or brindle with white markings on the muzzle, chest, and often a blaze between the eyes. Their expressive, round eyes and erect, bat-like ears are hallmark features. Temperamentally, Boston Terriers are friendly, intelligent, and lively, known for their charming personalities and unwavering loyalty. They adapt well to various living situations, making them excellent companions for both families with children and individuals in apartments, as long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Regarding health, they are a brachycephalic (short-nosed) breed, so care must be taken in hot weather to prevent overheating, and they can be prone to eye conditions and patellar luxation. Overall, their delightful nature and manageable size make them a beloved choice for many.
