Description

Dog Breed: Chihuahua (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Harper is afraid of other dogs and can become reactive (barking and lunging to create space) when she feels threatened or overwhelmed. Because of this, she would do best as the only pet in the home, where she can feel safe and secure without the stress of animal interactions. [Should Be Only Pet] OWNER EXPERIENCE:Harper needs a calm, patient owner experienced with positive reinforcement, and some dog experience, especially when it comes to reading body language and signals. She does best with someone who can recognize when she’s feeling unsure and is willing to help her build confidence using positive reinforcement and creating happy experiences. [Some Experience] KIDS: Harper would do best in a home with children aged 15 and older, and all family members should meet her first to ensure a good fit. [Kids 15+(Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Harper enjoys lounging with her humans but also appreciates light exercise. A few easy walks a day are enough to keep her happy and healthy. Regular exercise and plenty of mental enrichment such as puzzles and games will help meet her needs. [Good walking buddy] VETERINARY CARE: She’s in good health and simply needs routine vet care like any other dog. [Routine] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement will help Harper flourish with gentle guidance and consistency as she learns new skills and tricks. GROOMING: [Minimal]

Overview:

The Chihuahua, a captivating breed known for its diminutive size, boasts an ancient and somewhat mysterious origin, with most theories pointing to Mexico as its birthplace, potentially descending from the "Techichi," a small companion dog of the Toltec civilization. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their small, compact bodies, large expressive eyes, and erect ears, appearing in both smooth and long-coated varieties, showcasing a vast array of colors and markings. Despite their tiny stature, Chihuahuas possess a big personality; they are often described as spirited, alert, and fiercely loyal to their owners, sometimes displaying a bold and confident demeanor. While their small size makes them exceptionally well-suited for apartment living, they thrive in homes where they receive ample attention and mental stimulation. They can be good family pets for older children who understand how to interact gently with a small dog, but their delicate build makes them less suitable for boisterous toddlers. Regarding health, Chihuahuas can be prone to certain conditions like patellar luxation, heart problems, and dental issues, making regular veterinary check-ups crucial for their well-being.
