Susie #4 | 4-year-old Dachshund | Sweet, Silly, and Ready for Love Meet Susie — an adorable 4-year-old Dachshund who’s equal parts snuggly and spunky. At just 11 pounds, this petite girl is a classic black-and-tan beauty with a big personality. Susie came from a puppy mill situation, but she’s quickly learning how wonderful life as a loved companion can be. She’s a friendly, affectionate little dog who enjoys being close to her people and curling up under the covers for naps. Susie is doing well with house training and is already about 75% there. She’ll stand by the door to signal when she needs to go out, and with a little consistency, she’ll master it completely. She hasn’t yet learned leash manners or crate training, but she’s eager to please and responds positively to gentle structure and encouragement. She gets along great with other small dogs and would love a home with a canine friend to help her feel secure and keep her company. She has not been around large dogs or children yet, but she’s sweet and adaptable, so older, calm kids would likely be fine. Cats, however, are a no-go for Susie — she’s a bit too fixated on them and would do best in a cat-free home. Susie’s energy level is moderate; she enjoys short walks, car rides, and plenty of lap time. She’s motivated by food and affection, loves to burrow under blankets, and has an endearing little prance when she walks. Her ideal home would be one with someone who works from home or has another friendly dog to keep her company. This darling girl has come a long way already and is ready to find a forever family who will give her the love, patience, and gentle guidance she deserves. Susie may be small, but her heart — and her capacity to love — is enormous. If you and the dog are a good match then we'll connect you with our dog's foster parents to chat more in-depth. Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
