Description
Dog Breed: Terrier (medium coat). Meet Della, the terrier mix. Della arrived with two other dogs as strays. They were all a bit dirty and timid. With time and patience, they have started warming up and enjoying the comforts of soft bedding and gentle pets. A dog-savvy adopter that will prioritize acclimation to the new home and provide a quiet environment for growth will be a great fit for Della. Della has attended small dog playgroup with other dogs (from her âcrewâ and new ones). She enjoys the company of other dogs and may do well in a home with a dog from her current cohort and/or with some new canine friends. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption to ensure they get along. We do not have any history of Della with kids or cats. Since she is a shy gal, dog-savvy children are recommended. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
