Description
Dog Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound. We are looking for a home with no children for River. She is the sweetest dog. She sleeps most of the time, and she loves to lay out in the sun. She is older and we want a calm home for her. While a fenced yard is not a requirement, it should be noted that she has learned to clear 4ft fencing so a taller fence, in ground fence or tie out system is needed if the dog will be outside without supervision. River is a calm sweet girl, approximately 65 pounds and guessing 8 years old. She is potty trained and crate trained and is very food motivated. We think that she used to be a trained hunting dog because of her enthusiasm to run out the door and jump into a crate in the car. She is great with other dogs and cats and is mild mannered around her people. She crates lovely and is currently in her crate through the night or when her foster family isn't in the home. At her previous home before coming into rescue, we were told that she was fine when left loose in the house. River was heartworm positive when she came into rescue and will require monthly heartworm prevention. If you are interested in meeting and/or adopting this baby, please fill out an application. Overview:
The Treeing Walker Coonhound, a breed originating in the American South, was meticulously developed for its exceptional ability to track and "tree" raccoons and other small game. Physically, they are athletic and elegant, showcasing a smooth, short coat typically in tri-color (black, white, and tan) or bi-color patterns, along with a distinctive long tail and expressive, often pleading, brown eyes. Weighing between 50-70 pounds, their lean musculature allows for impressive endurance. Temperamentally, they are known for being intelligent, friendly, and affectionate, making them wonderful companions. However, their strong prey drive and high energy levels mean they thrive in active homes with securely fenced yards; apartment living is generally not recommended due to their need for extensive exercise and a tendency to bay. While generally a healthy breed, potential owners should be aware of possible issues like hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as bloat. Their loving nature makes them suitable for active families willing to provide ample physical and mental stimulation.
