Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. What an exciting weekend we had! We welcomed three adorable puppies from shelters into our care, and we’re thrilled to introduce you to our first little buddy, Aksel! When we inquired about his littermate (we had a foster home available for a female puppy who is now named Matilda), the shelter informed us that she had a brother. We couldn't leave Aksel behind, forlorn in a kennel run by himself. After all, he and Matilda had shared the kennel space together! So, he too headed home with one of our wonderful volunteers. During the car ride home, all he wanted was some cuddles, but a few tasty treats made for a good substitute to keep his spirits up riding shotgun. At just 9 weeks old, Aksel is such a sweetheart! He has the softest, fluffiest coat, especially after his first bath, which he seemed to really enjoy. This cute little guy loves to play with toys, follows our resident shepherds and humans everywhere, has a healthy appetite, and snoozes in his crate for about five hours at night before needing a potty break. He loves to curl up at your feet, and it’s the cutest thing when he playfully nibbles on your fuzzy slippers before settling down for a nap. Plus, he was a champ during his nail trimming with a Dremel! Our resident shepherds have given him their seal of approval as he trots underneath them. Potty training is still a work in progress, but today we celebrated a big win when he successfully went outside! We are absolutely smitten with this little guy, so stay tuned for more updates on Aksel’s adventures! Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook and our newest Threads account where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. An overwhelming number of shepherds in our local shelters need our help for a fresh start. Would you share your home and part of your life to help shepherds find new families? You provide the love, and we'll provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this .shepheroes/foster-form, and we'll be in touch ASAP! We appreciate your consideration.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
