Description

Dog Breed: Great Pyrenees (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 275. had 2 puppies 6/24 Shayla and Tucker’s story has been a long one, but today we finally get to share some good news. We first took these two in back in mid June from the Apple Valley Animal Shelter in California. They came in as strays, most likely dumped together, and Shayla had two tiny puppies with her. For a Great Pyrenees litter it was unusual, but sadly those puppies became sick at just 10 days old. We rushed them to the vet and spent $1,200 trying to save them, but both tested positive for distemper and did not make it. We were heartbroken. From that moment on, our focus was on saving the parents. Shayla and Tucker also tested positive for distemper, so we put a plan in place. They stayed in strict quarantine in California while we paid for their boarding, food, and ongoing care. Every monthly retest cost over $800, and after four months and repeated testing, we finally got the negative results we had been praying for. All in, their care, quarantine, testing, food, and vet visits have cost several thousand dollars — and every single dollar was worth it. Shayla and Tucker are now fully negative for distemper, healthy, happy, and officially spayed and neutered thanks to the wonderful vet team in California. They’re living the good life while they wait for transport and will be heading up to Montana very soon. They are finally ready for their next chapter. Typical Pyrs… a little dramatic, incredibly resilient, and absolutely worth every bit of the effort.

Great Pyrenees

A.K.A.: Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Patou, Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées, Pyrenean, Big White Dog, Bear Dog, Gentle Giant, Great Pyr, Pyr
Overview:

The Great Pyrenees is a majestic and ancient breed, originating in the Pyrenean mountains between France and Spain, where they served as formidable livestock guardians. Physically, they are large, powerful dogs, easily recognized by their thick, double coat, typically white (though sometimes marked with badger, grey, or tan), and a distinctive "double dewclaw" on their hind legs. Despite their imposing size, their temperament is generally calm, gentle, and remarkably patient, making them excellent companions. They possess a natural protectiveness, which translates to a watchful eye over their families and property. While loving and tolerant with children, their size and barking tendencies make them less suited for small apartment living; a home with a yard is ideal. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye conditions, emphasizing the importance of responsible breeding. Their independent nature also means they require consistent, positive reinforcement training.
