Description

Dog Breed: Beagle. "PLEASE READ ALL BEFORE CONSIDERING Meet Spirte, Female, 3 yo, 20lbs, HW-, up to date on shots. Her foster mom says this about her… Sprite requires a home that has the patience and compassion to let her come to you, and undo whatever trauma she went through in her past life. Sprite is one of the most fearful dogs we’ve ever fostered. We’ve had her for 4 weeks now and she still runs away to her safe space when anyone enters the room. If you are expecting a cuddle buddy, and a dog to pet, this is not the dog for you. Though she wants to be in the same room as you, she will not allow you near her before running away to another part of the house. We often find her cowering under our dining table. She is particularly afraid of men, she’s not aggressive, but my husband just can’t get near her. She will not eat unless you or other dogs are not in the same room as her, so we let her eat in another room with the door closed. Sprite LOVES other dogs, in fact the only reason she is coming out of her shell a little is because there are three other dogs in our household. She must live with other dogs to show her it’s safe. She is crate trained, and house trained, she knows to potty outside, but for the first few weeks in our home, she peed in place whenever we approached her. For three weeks we literally scared the poop and pee out of her, just trying to bring her food bowl to her. She loves to play outside in a fenced in backyard, but we have not tried walking her because she cowers and won’t move when on a leash, or even worse she will try to slip her harness and runaway (she will come with an escape free 2 hounds harness and leash), she will also come with an air tag, because she is likely to run away (So iphone or ipad recommended). She is not aggressive in any way, she would be submissive to any dog, and she is not food aggressive either. She would not do well in a home with little kids. She jumps at the sound of a door shutting. The beagle rescue says it takes 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn routine, 3 months to feel at home. With Sprite; double that timeline... it will take 6 days to decompress, 6 weeks to learn your routine, and 6 months to feel like family. Sprite will be a loving, fun, happy dog, you just have to give it time. Please don’t adopt Sprite unless you’re prepared to give her a 6 month chance to recognize she’s loved."

Overview:

The Beagle is a beloved scent hound with a rich history, originally bred in England for hunting hare and rabbit. Their most recognizable physical traits include a sturdy, compact build, adorable floppy ears, and soulful brown or hazel eyes. Beagles typically weigh between 18-30 pounds and stand 13-16 inches tall, featuring a smooth, dense coat that comes in a variety of tri-color or bi-color patterns. In terms of temperament, they are known for being exceptionally friendly, curious, and outgoing, making them wonderful companions for families with children and other pets. However, their strong prey drive and inclination to follow interesting scents mean they require a securely fenced yard and consistent leash training. While adaptable, their need for exercise and tendency to vocalize (howl!) makes them less ideal for small apartment living unless daily walks and mental stimulation are guaranteed. Regarding health, Beagles can be prone to certain conditions like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and intervertebral disc disease, making responsible breeding and regular veterinary check-ups important.
