Simon #5 | 4-Month-Old Cattle Dog Mix | A Curious Snuggle Bug Meet Simon, a 4-month-old cattle dog mix with soft black fur, white markings, and a few charming polka dots for good measure. Weighing about 25 pounds, this sweet pup is playful, affectionate, and endlessly curious—always eager to explore his surroundings, even when the world feels a little big and intimidating. Simon is proving to be a smart and well-mannered pup. He’s nearly house-trained, sleeps soundly when left alone for a few hours, and is making steady progress with crate training. On walks, he stays close and moves at your pace, growing braver every day. He’s learning commands quickly—“sit,” “come,” “no,” “leave it,” and even “lay down”—all thanks to his love of treats and desire to please. Around other dogs, Simon is friendly and affectionate, sharing plenty of kisses and tail wags with his small foster brother. While he hasn’t met cats or children yet, his gentle, loving nature suggests he will do well with calm introductions. Simon loves playing with toys, chewing on bones, and snuggling up with his humans—he often rests his head on you for comfort and falls asleep in your arms. As a young cattle dog, Simon is starting to show some natural herding behaviors, like gentle nudging, so a home without small children would be best. His ideal adopter will understand herding breeds and provide consistent, positive reinforcement to help build his confidence. With the right guidance, Simon will blossom into a devoted, well-mannered best friend. Simon’s perfect home includes an active lifestyle and plenty of love. He’ll thrive with someone who enjoys walks, hikes, or park time and who will continue to support his confidence-building in new situations. After playtime, he’s perfectly content to curl up in his bed or relax beside you. Once a timid stray, Simon has quickly adapted to home life and is already proving to be smart, loving, and ready to find his forever family. Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
