Description
Dog Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog. Joy is a one-year-old Catahoula Leopard mix whose name couldn’t be more fitting—she’s a happy, affectionate girl who loves to be near her people. At 51 lbs, she’s known for following her people everywhere—whether that’s sitting on the bathroom rug to keep you company or sneaking in a few extra kisses when you least expect it. She’s house trained and crate trained, though she takes a moment to settle in her crate. Joy prefers having her humans home but has shown she can be left uncrated for short periods of time once she settles in. She may bark or whine briefly when left, so she will need a home without shared walls (no townhomes/apartments). Joy currently lives with two resident dogs and enjoys playing with them, though she can be a little bossy and is still learning manners. She hasn’t been around cats, so a proper introduction is recommended. Because she’s still young and bouncy, a home without small children (no kids under 13) will be required. She adores fetch, loves to run in the yard, and can’t resist snuggle time when play is over. With a medium energy level, Joy enjoys daily walks or yard play and then happily crashes for long naps. This sweet girl is looking for a family who will give her love, consistency, and a little patience as she continues to learn good manners. In return, Joy will bring her signature happiness to every day you share together! Overview:
The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a striking and intelligent breed, originating in the southern United States, particularly Louisiana, where they were bred as versatile working dogs. Their most distinctive physical feature is their "leopard" spotted coat, which comes in a stunning array of colors and patterns, often accompanied by captivating "cracked" or "glass" eyes. These medium-to-large dogs possess a strong, muscular build, reflecting their heritage as agile hunters and herders. Temperamentally, Catahoulas are known for being independent, alert, and protective, yet also deeply loyal to their families. They thrive on having a "job" to do and require significant mental and physical stimulation, making them unsuitable for apartment living and best suited for active families with experience handling strong-willed dogs. While generally healthy, potential owners should be aware of a predisposition to deafness (especially in dogs with excessive white markings) and hip dysplasia. Proper socialization and consistent training from a young age are crucial for a well-adjusted Catahoula.
