Description
Dog Breed: Unknown breed. Mercury recently lost his human. We intended to try and take him in, but at the last minute, it turned into him and his older brother. We already have two large dogs of our own, so four is simply too much. Before coming to us, he lived with his 9 yr old brother, two cats, two adult females, and a female teenager, whom he slept with almost nightly. Mercury will be 2 in February. We aren't sure what breed he is, but we think maybe pit and boxer. He loves a good cuddle and will curl up behind ya. Mercury is also a big blanket guy, and with curl in for the night just about anywhere with a soft blanket. He is food focused and eats too fast. We've been using a slow feeder, which helps. He will cruse counters after meal prep, looking for leftovers. He's not leash trained but walkable with structure. He understands basic commands; good boy, his name, come and go. Sit occasionally. We've been working on stay. He is house broken and will sit at the door to go out. He is social, in that he'd rather be with everyone versus left alone, but when he needs downtime, he will go off and snooze alone. He so desperately wants to fit in with our pack, looking for guidance but he's still got some puppy energy. He doesn't really know how to play with another dog, but he does love a squeaker toy or hard chew. He was at the vet last week and is healthy. He is up to date on vacines and testing (11/8), neutered (11/10), and had 3 months flea and tick treatment (11/1). A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
