MICKEY - HAVANESE / MIXED (MEDIUM COAT) DOG FOR ADOPTION

Dog Breed: Havanese / Mixed (medium coat). Mickey was adopted from us in 2023. Sadly his family is looking to re-home him. This is a unique situation for us as we typically have our pets returned to our location, but his family is wanting to keep him in his home until a new home can be found and they live in Illinois. If someone in this area (Holland, MI) is interested in adopting, we can set up a time to meet Mickey here in this location. This is what his current owner says about him: " I adopted Mr Mickey in August of 2023, and have LOVED having him as part of our home and family. He has done great with other dogs, has been patient with high-energy puppies and gentle and loving to geriatric dogs. He has taken well to cats, and has become the best snuggle buddy and play partner for our kitten last fall. Unfortunately, starting last spring and coming into this holiday season, we have started to expose him more to family events, including small children. His herding instincts tend to kick in and he does not respond well to sudden movements or changes in his environment. He does well with older kids (10+) in small settings (e.g., my partner and I, their parents and the children). However, group environments of 6+ people or children under the age of 10 have been problematic. We have tried training sessions, medication regimens, titrated exposure in small groups vs larger gatherings, as well as limiting his exposure to children altogether. Everything has felt like one step forward and two steps back, as he has continued to thrive and make great progress in other areas of training. He is still overtly connected to me as the woman of the house, and has his instances of barking/jumping, particularly out of excitement when I first get home. While this behavior definitely still exists, the number and length of these instances has decreased significantly. We are considering starting a family in the next 1-2 years and have continued to consider whether it would be a healthy and conducive environment for Mickey when that were to occur. It does not feel fair to him for us to continue this journey without putting his long-term needs as a first priority. Given the continued barking/jumping patterns, his overt connection to me, and his difficulty with young children - it unfortunately does not appear as though a young growing family will be the best fit for him." Because of this information, we are looking for a home either without children or older children. He does well with other dogs and cats. According to his family, he is current on his vaccines and has a negative heartworm and tick disease test. We did know who Mickey's mother was and she was a havanese. His owners did a DNA test on him-results are in the photos. His current owner reports Mickey is current on his vaccines and negative heartworm test. When he was adopted from us he also had a negative heartworm/tick disease test, was current on vaccines, he had a negative fecal test for parasites, is neutered and microchipped. He is about 5.5 years old. Due to this unique situation, we are just looking to find a good fur-ever home for Mickey. There will be no adoption fee. An approved adoption application is required.
