Email: ddrtxinfogmail Primary Website: .DDRTX River Oakley is estimated at 3 years old and only 10 pounds. He is a red long haired dachshund although you can't fully tell yet since his coat is in bad shape. He was found running the streets like this. He has some hair loss due to an allergic reaction to fleas that caused a skin infection. He has been treated and his hair is slowly coming back. Please don't worry, his coat will be back in no time. River has proven himself to be a very sweet, fun and loving boy. He is good on a leash and loves walks. He is good with kids and other dogs. You do have to be careful though, he is a door darter. He does not seem to like being left alone either, The right home for River would be someone with a secure yard and who is home more often. He really could use a doggie friend to play with or his humans that are home more often and they can play and exercise him. Love dachshunds and not ready to adopt or circumstances won't permit having a dog? How about being a sponsor or making a donation. Every one of our dachshunds receives excellent medical care along with day to day food, love and housing. Overview:
The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
