Dog Breed: Unknown breed. Meet Rupert! Martin, Rupert, Kobi and Chuck came to us when their owner had moved out and left them behind. They were very scared boys when we first got them but they are slowly opening up and hanging out with their foster parents. They seem particularly drawn to men but do warm up to women. Because of their timidness at this time we would recommend children over the age of 10. They are dog and cat friendly though. Rupert is about 4 years old and working on all his inside manners. He is not totally housetrained yet but he is working on it. He would do just fine in an apartment or in a home. Could he be your next BFF? He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, on heartworm and flea prevention and heartworm negative. His adoption fee is $375. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
