Description
Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever / Australian Shepherd. Meet Mello! He is a 5-year-old, 65 lb Labrador-Australian Cattle Dog mix is ready to find the forever home he's always deserved. Fully vetted and neutered, Mello is a loyal companion with a heart full of love. He's happiest by your side--whether it's going for long walks (he's improving on leash every day!), playing fetch, or simply relaxing near you. Mello is potty trained, crate trained (though we recommend a gated area or quiet room instead), and a great eater. He's also a fantastic alert dog: quiet by nature, but will let you know if someone's at the door. Mello has been through a lot--surviving past abuse and now in his fourth home through no fault of his own. Because of this, he needs an experienced, patient owner, and to be the only pet in an adult-only structured household where he can truly thrive. He's deeply affectionate, incredibly loyal, and just wants to be loved--and he'll show you every day how much he loves you in return. If you're looking for a devoted best friend who's ready to heal and grow with you, Mello might be your perfect match. If you feel your home might be the right place for such a great dog - the place to start is with the adoption application found at .dfwrescueme/adopt. Once submitted, the foster will contact you promptly to tell you more and to arrange a time to meet! The adoption fee for all of our dogs is $300.00, which includes their vaccinations and spay/neuter. Mello is participating in the DFW Rescue Me Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by their foster, not by DFWRM.

Overview:
The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
