Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Meet Atlas! Atlas is a find for anyone looking for a Shepherd mix as a canine companion. He's a young 4 year old who came to us from a local animal control with his bestie Daisy! Both companions are currently in search for a home that they can call their own! You will instantly fall in love with his big brown eyes, floppy ears and friendly personality. He enjoys the company of people and truly enjoys sniffy walks and other adventures. He may be able to live with another dog pending a dog meet. He knows some of his basic cues like Name Game and sit. He gets excited so he may not sit for a long time but he is learning! If he sounds like the dog you've always been looking for please come by to meet him - he won't dissappoint! My friends describe me as: Adventurous, playful, friendly. Atlas is currently up to date on all vaccinations, has been spayed/neutered, microchipped and seen by our vet team. For more information on Atlas or any other animal currently residing at the Animal Rescue League of Boston, please call us at 617-426-9170. We welcome adopters from NH, RI, CT, and NY. However, we will be unable to facilitate same day adoptions due to state regulated paperwork requirements.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
