Description
Dog Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier. Bishop is a 3-year-old, black and white, American Staffordshire Terrier who is brand new to the shelter and already winning us over with his charm. He’s currently on the thin side, so he’s enjoying three meals a day to help him put on some much-needed weight — and fortunately, this boy is not a picky eater. Bishop absolutely loves being around people and soaks up affection like it’s his favorite treat. One of his most endearing features? His sweet little webbed paws! We’re excited to find out if this means he’s a fan of water and swimming. Fingers crossed for a stretch of unseasonably warm weather so we can put his paws to the test. The American Staffordshire Terrier, often affectionately called an "AmStaff," is a breed with a fascinating history, originating in 19th-century England and later refined in the United States. Physically, they are medium-sized, muscular, and agile dogs, known for their powerful build and distinctive wide smile. Their short, stiff coat comes in a variety of colors and patterns. In terms of temperament, AmStaffs are generally intelligent, confident, and highly loyal to their families. They possess a strong desire to please and can be quite affectionate. While they can make excellent family companions and often get along well with children, early socialization and consistent training are crucial due to their strength and inherent protective instincts. They are adaptable and can thrive in various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive adequate daily exercise and mental stimulation. Health-wise, they are generally robust, but some individuals may be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as certain heart conditions.
