Description
Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever (short coat). A5737767 Meet Truffle , a 1.5-year-old lab mix boy carved from pure onyx - with just a few elegant touches of marble white on his chest and the tips of his back toes. Given how he flinches when hands move too quickly near his face, it’s clear his early experiences with humans weren’t the kindest. Yet Truffle’s heart remains wide open - he’s incredibly sweet, people-loving, and oh so eager to form a real connection. With a gentle approach and some confidence building, his warm, tender personality truly shines. He’s been curious, friendly, and polite with other dogs at the shelter, though his size and youthful energy may be a bit overwhelming for tiny pups. Already potty trained and knowing “sit” and “down”, this boy’s desire to bond close with his people makes him a dream for positive-reinforcement training - he’s ready to flourish with someone who’ll show him the world can be safe and kind. Will that be with you? -1 year 7 month old black and white lab mix -61 pound neutered male -up to date on all shots and preventatives, so ready to go home with you today! -came to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on 11/9/25 as an owner surrender - he wasn’t even brought to the shelter, but surrendered in the field, and we have no notes and no idea why, as Truffle is so sweet and darling! -needs some leash work, but is already potty trained and knows basic commands like “sit” and “down”, so this should be a breeze -could use some socializing with other dogs, but could make a good little brother to other pups you may already have, as long as intros are done carefully and intentionally - an older pup would be perfect for confidence building and learning the ropes TRUFFLE’S VIDEO: youtube/shorts/yWA or more information, contact volunteer Lor at lorunitedhopeforanimals Photo Credit simroc_creative Look up this or other animals at Baldwin Park Animal Care Center animalcare.lacounty.gov/view-our-animals/ Use their unique ID NUMBER. Overview:
The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
