Description
Dog Breed: Siberian Husky (medium coat). How to Adopt Austin is a handsome 7.5-year-old husky with a soft, fluffy black-and-white coat and striking blue eyes. He’s incredibly loving and affectionate with his people and truly enjoys human companionship. Austin is both house trained and leash trained. Like many huskies, he has a strong prey drive, so he’ll need close supervision around small animals. He would do best in a home without cats, birds, or other small pets, and he’ll require a secure 6-foot fence to keep him safe. Currently, Austin is living in a kennel. While this is a step up from the shelter, it’s still a stressful environment—surrounded by many other dogs with limited time to play and relax in a yard. Austin would thrive with more freedom, regular exercise, and the comfort of a home. Austin was found running loose in Taos after having been adopted from us many years ago. He returned to the rescue in 2023 and has been waiting patiently at the kennel ever since. He’s ready for a true forever home—one with plenty of playtime, love, and a family he can finally call his own. If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion, Austin may be the perfect fit.

Breed overview
Siberian Husky
A.K.A.: Husky, Arctic Husky, Chukcha, Chukchi, Chukchi Sled Dog, Sibe, Sibes, Sled Dog, Snow Dog
Overview:
The Siberian Husky is a striking and beloved breed, originating from Northeast Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people for pulling sleds over long distances in harsh conditions. Physically, they are easily recognizable by their medium size, thick double coat (available in various colors and markings), and often captivating blue or bi-colored eyes. Their temperament is typically friendly, outgoing, and playful, making them generally good with children and other dogs. However, their independent and sometimes stubborn nature, coupled with a strong prey drive, means consistent training and secure containment are essential. While affectionate, their high energy levels and need for significant exercise make them less suitable for sedentary lifestyles or tiny apartments; a house with a securely fenced yard is often preferred. Health-wise, they are generally robust but can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia and eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. Overall, a Siberian Husky thrives with active families committed to meeting their exercise and mental stimulation needs.
