Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). **If you have any questions about King after reading his profile, you can contact a volunteer at 757-237-2430 who can answer your questions.** Meet King ❤️ This super sweet boy has been at the shelter OVER TWO YEARS! :( King was surrendered to the shelter in 2023 when his owner was moving. He lived his entire life outside, never receiving vet care, and has now spent the last year in the shelter so he has never been loved as part of a family. King lived with another dog in the past, but would prefer to be the only pet in his new home. He is described as loyal & protective with his family and absolutely loves to give kisses. King is about 5 years old and would likely do well with older children. He does great in the car, loves listening to music, & enjoys chicken nuggets ❤️ He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, & heartworm negative so he can go home right away! His adoption fee is only $1! You do NOT need to live in Virginia Beach to adopt or foster! Available for adoption, foster, or rescue at Virginia Beach Animal Care & Adoption Center 341 South Birdneck Road, VB Open daily 12-5 pm Field Trip Update: King did great! He was easy to get into my truck. He sat there calmly on the ride and was easy to get out. He behaved at the drive thru and politely waited while I shared my chicken with him. He did drink my tea sitting in the cupholder before I could stop him. He has such an intense look, but he's really gentle, and it's safe to feed him with your fingers.

A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
