Description
Dog Breed: Rat Terrier (short coat). Sweet Violet is a 13-year-old, 13 lb. senior rattie with an adorable face that melts hearts! She is a quiet girl who rarely barks. She is fully house-trained and will let you know when she needs to go outside by standing at the front door. Violet gets along well with her three canine siblings although she doesn’t show much interest in play. She is also friendly with new visitors. She sleeps through the night in her dog bed next to her foster parents. Violet displays a somewhat “nonchalant” personality and is content to just stand or meander about the house in an unconcerned way. She enjoys being in the same room with her people and likes being picked up and cuddled for short periods of time. She's still figuring out whether she likes being a lapdog. She sits nicely on your lap for one or two minutes, gives your face a few kisses, but then she gets very squirmy! Violet loves spending time outside and enjoys leisurely walks or wandering around her fenced backyard. She walks beautifully on a leash. Indoors, she can go up or down one or two steps comfortably, but she can no longer handle long staircases. Violet is nearly deaf. She responds to loud sounds like clapping or barking but does not react to softer noises, including voices. She also has poor vision in both eyes due to mild cataracts and corneal opacities but she is able to navigate around her home and outdoor areas just fine. Violet requires daily prescription eye drops ($40/month) and an eye ointment twice a day ($70/month). She also takes arthritis medication ($45.00/month) and gabapentin at night to prevent seizures ($20.00/month) and has been seizure-free for over six months with this regimen. Violet is a special senior girl with so much love to give. She's looking for a calm, caring home where she can continue to blossom and be cherished in her golden years. Want to see more of Violet? Overview:
The Rat Terrier is a lively and intelligent American breed, originally developed in the early 20th century from a mix of Fox Terriers, Old English White Terriers, and other small terriers, primarily for farm work and pest control. These compact yet sturdy dogs typically weigh between 10-25 pounds and stand 10-18 inches tall, boasting a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of patterns, often with large patches of color over white. Known for their energetic and inquisitive nature, Rat Terriers are remarkably adaptable and affectionate, making them excellent companions for active individuals or families. While their boundless energy necessitates regular exercise and mental stimulation, they can thrive in apartments provided their needs are met. Generally a healthy breed, they have a lifespan of 12-18 years, though some may be prone to patellar luxation or Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Their friendly disposition and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and a joy to live with.
