Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). INFO: Meet Onyx - one of our Long-Stay Legends! Our Long-Stay Legends have been at the shelter for over a year and it's time they find the homes they deserve. Long-stay Legends are placed on our Urgent List to boost their visibility and highlight their fantastic attributes in order to fast track their journey home. We believe that a year is far too long to wait for a forever family and so does Onyx! Onyx is friendly, easy to walk on leash, has calm energy but can become silly and playful. He does have some medical issues related to his age but still gets around well. He was recently diagnosed with severe degenerative joint disease. If adopted/rescued an orthopedic consult is recommended. Please help us change their story by adopting, fostering or sharing this pup's profile today!

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
