Come meet Lemuel and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (1/4) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria, VA (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Lemuel Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd/heeler mix Best Guess for Age: 7 months as of December 2025 SEX: Male Estimated Weight (he is still growing): 34.5 pounds as of 11/16/25 Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with kids or cats but are happy to discuss integration techniques with interested adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home. Special Adoption Considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think this pup would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure they can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes. Lemuel is Looking For: Hiya! I'm Lemuel! You can watch a video of my rescue in Puerto Rico here: youtube/shorts/uT4qlY7lLQw?feature=share. I'm looking for my forever family! I can't wait to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. But most of all I want to know I'm safe and loved, where I belong. I have so many kisses and so much love and loyalty to give in return. What do you say? Do I get to go home with you? What My Foster Says About Me: Lemuel is a smart, snuggly, sweet, and social guy! He LOVES other dogs, including my own resident dog and my other foster puppy. He and my other foster puppy (Willie) can often be found chasing and wrestling each other, or tugging on toys! Lemuel (who also answers to Lemmy) really enjoys meeting new dogs at events and at the dog park. He will usually roll on his back and let the other dog sniff him first, then lick their face and pounce playfully. Lemmy is a smart boy who sits promptly for treats. He also observes carefully while I prepare his food and runs directly into the crate when I pick up his bowl from the counter! He hangs out and naps calmly in his crate while I’m at work, and enjoys snuggling with me on the couch in the evenings. Lemmy also enjoys tossing around squeaky toys and chewing on Benebones. Lemuel is a great dog who will make his lucky adopter very happy! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
