Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Husky / Mixed (medium coat). INFO: Leo is a strikingly handsome foster pup who is looking for his forever home! With his foster family, he has been an affectionate, people-oriented dog who seems to enjoy being close to his humans. He often chooses to settle nearby for cuddles and has interacted positively with children in the home and other dogs in his fosterâs experience. He has been potty trained, has responded to basic cues like sit and shake, and appears treat-motivated, playful, curious, and fairly active. On walks, he seems to have good stamina and interest in exploring. Leo has shown excitement when seeing other dogs or meeting new people and may pull on leash, bark, or jump initially, afterwhich he settles. At times, his foster has noticed that he can seem a little jealous of his foster siblings when attention is being shared. In the home, he has had challenges with crating and with being left alone for longer stretches, though he has tolerated shorter periods alone inside and has made improvements with time. He appears to benefit from routine, companionship, and ongoing guidance as he continues to adjust. Please reach out to petfosterlongbeach.gov to meet Leo!

Breed overview
Overview:
The Gerberian Shepsky is a hybrid of the German Shepherd Dog and Siberian Husky, emerging in North America as a modern companion with working-dog roots. Typically medium to large, they feature an athletic build, erect ears, and a dense double coat, often with striking blue or heterochromatic eyes. Their temperament blends loyalty, intelligence, and independence, making them affectionate yet occasionally headstrong. With very high energy, they thrive on daily exercise and structured training, suiting active families more than apartment living without ample outdoor time. Early socialization supports good manners with children and other pets. Notable health considerations include potential hip dysplasia and eye issues; regular vet care, weight management, and coat grooming help maintain well-being. Their typical lifespan ranges around 10–13 years, rewarding committed owners with a loyal, adventurous companion.
