Name: Petey Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and basset hound mix Best Guess for Age: 4 months as of December 2025 SEX: Male Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 29.2 lbs as of 12/30/25 Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy. Petey is Looking For: Hi! I'm Petey and I'm looking for a life where I get to play with other dogs and explore and get lots of cuddles. My mama Prim raised me to have good manners but learning is lifelong so I'd like to go to puppy school too. Most of all, though, I want to always know where I belong, to be safe and loved for all my days. In exchange, I promise to give you so many adoring gazes and tail wags and so much love and loyal companionship. What do you say? Do I get to grow up with you? What My Foster Says About Me: There’s just something special about Petey! He may start off a little bashful, often choosing to hang with his dog pals first, but give him a little time and patience and—boom—you’ve got a cuddle bug. Once he settles in, Petey is all about the love and his signature butt scratches are his jam, and he’s proudly become a top-tier snuggler. Petey is also a very smart boy. He knows exactly when food is being prepared and will happily supervise from the kitchen. Treats are the fastest way to his heart, and he’s not shy about that at all! We’re currently helping Petey polish his “love language.” Right now, he shows affection with enthusiastic puppy playfulness (including some nibbles), and he’s making great progress every single day. He already understands the command “outside” and for the most part is doing a good job taking care of business where it belongs. This guy is a toy enthusiast! Squeaky toys and chewables are his absolute favorites, and they keep him happily occupied. Bonus update: Petey has recently discovered the joy of fetch and is learning to retrieve toys like a pro! With his adorable low-rider build, hound-style paws, and endlessly charming personality, Petey wins hearts. One meeting is all it takes to fall in love with this quirky, lovable little dude. Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog!
