Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Elmer is an affectionate, easygoing guy and the kind of dog who makes everyone feel instantly welcome. At a recent off-site adoption event he took everything in stride with a wagging tail and a happy heart. He was perfectly content sitting with his volunteer between enthusiastically greeting visitorsâoften leaning in close, because Elmer is the best kind of âleanerâ and likes to make sure you know heâs right there with you. Elmer showed off his signature full-body wags and his irresistibly sweet, always-happy expression. When given a stuffed toy, he was absolutely delighted and happily offered it to anyone who stopped by to say hello. He's proved himself to be as steady, sweet, and lovable as they come! I'm available for a 10 day adoption trial! Learn more about our adoption process.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
