Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. Meet Atlas! Breed: German Shepherd Dog Estimated DOB: 02/01/2025 Sex: Male (neutered) Weight: 60-65 lbs Currently up to date on all age appropriate vaccinations Things To Know about Atlas: Rescued from Mississippi after being hit by a car and left in his owner's yard for weeks without medical intervention - rescue advocated to secure his surrender so he could finally receive the care he deserved Breed experience required to adopt Atlas Underwent bilateral FHO surgery (Femoral Head Ostectomy) on both hips and was cleared for regular activity by his surgeon on 2/25 Continuing rehab with underwater treadmill sessions (he does great!) for a few more weeks before his re-check Will always have an abnormal gait and walk, but the important part is that he is now pain-free! Social butterfly who bonds immediately with people of all ages and sizes The biggest baby ever and hilariously over dramatic - super needy but in the most entertaining way (he'll literally paw at you to put your phone down and pet him!) Sweet, resilient boy who has blossomed in foster care and is learning to feel safe in a home again Happy, active boy with medium energy - he's either on or off and will need exercise to burn off energy before he wants to cuddle on the couch Loves playing with other dogs - enjoys chase in the yard and play bite face with whoever will entertain that game Can be a vocal player with other dogs Enjoys chewing on bones Walks beautifully on leash without pulling Rides great in the car Very food motivated and a great eater Housebroken! Sits by the door to let you know when he needs to go out Working on crate training Interested in cats but loses interest quickly - may still try to play with a cat, especially as an only dog in the home Can be vocal and would do best in a single family home (not suited for an apartment or townhome) Looking for a loving and committed forever home to provide him with the care and love he deservesLearn more and apply to adopt at TLCrescuePA/adopt Interested in fostering? Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
