Sweetie Pie | 5-Year-Old Foxhound | Happy Prancer with a Big Heart Sweetie Pie is a 65-pound brown-and-white Foxhound who truly lives up to his name. He’s reliably house trained, stands by the door when he needs to go out, and has had little to no accidents in his foster home. On leash he does fairly well—he may pull at times, but he enjoys getting out to explore. When left home alone for a few hours, he’s been a perfect gentleman, especially when crated with another dog nearby (and a little dog TV for company). He does great with dogs of all sizes and enjoys having canine friends around. He hasn’t been tested with cats or children yet, but he’s affectionate and easygoing with everyone he meets, showing no preference for men or women. Sweetie Pie is kennel trained, goes in easily (especially with a treat), sleeps through the night, and is a low shedder. He’s also a polite eater who tends to graze rather than gulp his meals. Sweetie Pie does have a higher energy level and would normally thrive with long walks, hikes, runs, car rides, and even swimming. However, he is heartworm positive and will need a calm, structured routine while he undergoes treatment over the next several months. That means keeping activity low and avoiding strenuous exercise or rough play for now. The good news is that heartworm treatment is very manageable, and once he’s cleared, he’ll be ready to enjoy the active life he was built for. Because of his size, curiosity, and typical hound enthusiasm, Sweetie Pie is not suited for apartment living and will require a home with a securely fenced 6-foot yard where he can safely stretch his legs when the time is right. He knows commands like stay, wait, and leave it, responds well to structure, and is both playful and incredibly sweet. He’s known for prancing around happily and flopping over for belly rubs at every opportunity. Sweetie Pie would do best in a committed home—ideally with other dogs and possibly kids—where he’ll receive love, patience during treatment, and plenty of adventures once he’s medically cleared. Surrendered from North Carolina, he’s ready to heal and then share his joyful, loving heart with his forever family. If you and the dog are a good match then we'll connect you with our dog's foster parents to chat more in-depth. If both you and the foster agree that the dog is a good fit then a meet and greet is scheduled. We require applicants' dogs to meet ours to ensure they get along. Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
