Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Don't forget!! We are currently open by appointment only. This is to control the traffic in the building at one time. If you would like to look at the cats/dogs for adoption, or if you need to relinquish or to do any other business, please message our FB page or call us at 304-267-8389 to schedule an appointment. If you see a specific pet for adoption on our FB page we can always set up a specific meet and greet for that as well. Check out this 6 yr. old, 64 lb., handsome guy!! His name is Deuce. He was the very last dog on the PG County Code Red list. They reached out and we just couldn't say no. Deuce is a doll baby. So sweet. So loving. He can be strong when walking on a leash. He takes treats very gently. We do not know anything about his history. Deuce is now safe and just needs you to 'share' his story to help him find a home. Adoption fee... $175, cash or credit card. If you already have a dog, bring them in with you for a 'meet and greet'. Mon.-Sat. 10-4 Thank you Angela and Family for taking Deuce out for "Doggy Day Out". Read below what they learned about Deuce while he was out of the shelter: "Deuce did great on his doggie day out. He really enjoyed the park. He was well relaxed in the car as well. When we arrived at the park, Deuce was so excited to get out and see where he was. It was a nice walk with him. He was strong on the leash in the beginning but by the end he was hardly pulling. He did seem to get excited when he saw a couple dogs at the park. He also did well with our son who loves dogs. Deuce is a wonderful and sweet loving dog who loves attention and definitely loves treats which he got quite alot of today. I know he can't wait to be a big cuddle bug. " We understand not everyone can adopt a pet. Some homes are full, some homes do not allow certain pets and some have lifestyles that can't handle a pet right now. You can still help. Sharing pictures on FB, volunteering, or just coming in and sponsoring part of the adoption fee for when the pet is adopted. This helps a lot. No amount is too small to donate towards the adoption fee. If you would like to help sponsor, speak to one of the staff. Especially the cats and kittens need help (since we usually have so many!) Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
