Description

Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Meet Max, the senior German Shepherd! Max came into the Shelter after his previous guardians could no longer care for him. Max lived in a home with children under 12, teenagers, men and women. Max spent the majority of his time outdoors in his previous home. He knows “sit” and “paw” and does well riding in the car. Max has history living with other dogs but does not have history with cats. Staff have observed that Max enjoys being with people and staying close for attention. Max went on a Doggy Day out with a volunteer who reports: `Max has been an absolute joy to have in the home. He is respectful indoors, loves to cuddle, and is definitely potty trained. Max has walked excellently on leash, staying right next to me wirh a loose leash. He hasn’t begged for food and lays down nearby if we are cooking or doing something around the house. Max did well in the car and hasn’t barked once. He is a little apprehensive about stairs, but is otherwise confident. He really blossomed outside of his kennel and seems very happy to be around people.` Max's adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation's Leave No One Behind fund- a fund that draws adopter's eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

German Shepherd Dog

A.K.A.: Alsatian, Alsatian Wolf Dog, Shepherd Dog, GSD, Deutscher Schäferhund, Schäferhund, Berger Allemand, Pastore Tedesco, Perro de Pastor Alemán, Alsatian Dog
Overview:

The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
