Description
Dog Breed: Unknown breed / mixed. Meet the sweetest boy Copper Copper is a 6-month-old hound mix weighing about 36 pounds, and despite his young age, he has already endured more pain than any puppy ever should. He was rescued from a life of severe neglect—left outside in every kind of weather, living in filth, and surviving by eating trash just to stay alive. He had multiple close encounters where he could have been seriously injured, and if his foster mom hadn’t stepped in when she did, Copper may never have had the chance to experience safety or love. When Copper was first found, his tiny body was covered in ticks, including deep inside his ears. He was immediately treated with NexGard Plus and given a warm bath—likely one of the first acts of true kindness he had ever known—soothing his dry, irritated skin and removing the parasites that had been weighing him down. Copper also has a mass on his right jawline. What was first believed to be a broken tooth turned out to be something far more heartbreaking. X-rays revealed the mass was caused by a gunshot wound. Thankfully, no bullet remains, but the damage to his jaw is still healing. The area must be closely monitored, as the bone attempting to heal could be rejected, potentially forming an abscess that would require surgical intervention. Since starting Clindamycin, the swelling has gone down significantly, and his foster mom remains hopeful as she watches him improve day by day. And yet—despite all of this—you would never know how much pain Copper has survived. He is one of the most loving, grateful, and joyful puppies you will ever meet. Copper lights up when he sees people, craving affection and connection as if he knows this second chance is precious. He is playful, sweet, and full of life, with a heart that still trusts humans even after everything he’s been through. Copper is up to date on vaccinations and preventatives and is fully dewormed. He is wonderful with children of all ages and gets along well with dogs of all sizes. He does really good on car rides and looks out the window to the places he's going to. He’s learning to walk nicely on a leash and sometimes pauses to take in his surroundings—after all, everything is still so new. But each day, he grows braver, more confident, and more comfortable in his foster home. Copper’s story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of compassion. This sweet boy has suffered, yet his heart remains open and full of love. All he needs now is someone to show him that the rest of his life will be gentle, safe, and filled with kindness.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
