All his 27lbs just want to be loved. He is estimated at 3 years old and came from a shelter so we don’t know much about his background, but we learned that he was actually quite popular at the shelter and also at our vet's office. During the holidays, Hewitt's foster family had all kinds of people and children over, and Hewitt was an amazing host, soaking up all the attention from littles and bigs alike. Most of our guests actually wanted to take him home! Seems like Hewitt has never met a stranger in his life. This docile boy is the perfect balance of playful but also calm and cuddly. He gets along with dogs his size and smaller, we are not sure about big ones yet. He’s got a big voice but rarely uses it. He has met some of the outside cats and wasn’t reactive in any way. He does well in the crate, is housebroken, and he's also been working on getting better at walking on the leash. Foster mom loves Hewitt because he truly is a good boy and so eager to please, he even earned a spot on the big bed, where he stays all night and won't get out of bed until he's got the signal to go potty in the morning. We don’t know what Hewitt is mixed with but we’ve wondered if he’s got some Labrador in him. He so easy going and would do great with active people that can give him lots of affection, take him on adventures, and since he seems to gravitate towards children, we believe he would be the perfect fit for a family with kids. A yard to run around is a must for this big boy. Hewitt is fully vetted and was cleared as healthy. He was neutered and even got a dental cleaning. If it sounds like Hewitt would be perfect for your family, get your application in so you can meet him; we are positive you are going to fall in love with him! Overview:

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
