Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Jack, the mixed breed! Jack came into the Shelter after his previous guardianâs housing policies changed and they were unable to keep him. Although he is 7 years old, Jack is still young at heart. His favorite activities are adventuring with his humans on trails -hiking or running. He would go for play dates with some canine friends at the local dog park and enjoyed that. At the Shelter, he has met other dogs â participating in a game of chase up and down the exercise yards. Another energetic, agile dog may be a fit after a meet ân greet at the Shelter. Jack is not recommended to go to a home with small animals, felines or birds due to observed prey drive. Jack is a smart guy who knows âsitâ, âdownâ, âspeakâ, âspinâ and âupâ. Jack was reported to be house trained in his previous home and did well with a 2 year old child in the previous home. Our medical team has observed that Jack has an abnormal right eye. It is partially collapsed, likely due to prior injury or infection. While his vision in that eye is compromised, it appears comfortable and does not need any treatment at this time. The should monitor for changes in the eye such as discharge and redness or other color changes and seek care with their own veterinarian if these are observed. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
