Description
Dog Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat). Please read the pet description IN IT'S ENTIRETY before applying. Thank you for your cooperation. Update: owner surrendered to our rescue. STRAY NEW INTAKE - FOUND NEAR CENTERNARY COLLEGE NEW YEAR'S EVE! NOT YET TAKING APPLICATIONS – NOT YET AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION NEW INTAKE 1/1/2026: Meesa - female - age: TBD - weight TBD - Shih Tzu Reason for intake: We were contacted about this little girl. The finders found her New Year's Eve near Centenary College in Shreveport. They contacted us for help. She is with us now (the picture was taken by finder). We're not sure if she ran due to the fireworks or was dumped, abandoned, or what. She does have significant allergies, yeasty skin and missing/thinning hair. Allergies can be VERY hard to combat so her condition doesn't necessarily mean she hasn't been cared for. We've notified animal control that we have the dog. Once her stray is up, we'll send her to the vet for vetting IF no owner comes forward before then. If you are the owner and notify us that this is your dog TODAY, you won't have to go through animal control to reclaim. IF you notify us after today, you will be required to reclaim her through animal control during business hours and pay the reclamation fees. NOT TAKING APPLICATIONS: Many dogs, particularly breeder, hoarder or senior dogs, can have multiple medical issues that need addressed. Additionally, sometimes we take in young puppies requiring multiple vaccinations and/or quarantining. In this particular case, we are not yet taking applications either due to age or possible illness or some other reason. We will post when s(he) is ready for adoption. In the interest of fairness, EARLY application submissions will NOT be considered. Please note… we cannot respond to messages/emails, etc., on dogs that are NOT yet available for adoption. Please wait until the dog is available for adoption. We will post him or her on Facebook in our Adoptable Dog Album pinned to the top of our page which you can follow at this link: .facebook/share/1B46skRWF5/ OR you can keep checking our website at .roadtorescuela. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ~ Gandhi Be responsible ~ Always spay/neuter, keep your dogs on heartworm prevention, vaccinate against disease... and if you bring a pet into your life, commit to that pet for life. Blessings.

Breed overview
Shih Tzu
A.K.A.: Lion Dog, Chrysanthemum Dog, Foo Dog, Xi Shi dog, Tibetan Temple Dog, Chinese Imperial Dog, Lhasa Lion Dog, Shitzu, Schipperke, Tzu, Shih Tzu Kou, Kou
Overview:
The Shih Tzu, affectionately known as the "lion dog," boasts an ancient and regal lineage, originating from the Tibetan plateau and further refined in imperial China. These charming canines are easily recognized by their striking appearance: a small, sturdy build, a distinctive undershot jaw, and a long, flowing double coat that often requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Temperamentally, Shih Tzus are renowned for being affectionate, outgoing, and playful companions, making them wonderfully suitable for a variety of households. Their adaptable and generally good-natured disposition means they often thrive in families with children and are particularly well-suited for apartment living due to their modest exercise requirements. While generally robust, potential owners should be aware of common breed-specific health concerns, including respiratory issues (due to their brachycephalic, or "smushed" face), eye conditions, and luxating patella. Despite these considerations, a Shih Tzu typically brings immense joy and companionship to their devoted owners.
