Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Chapo, the black and white pittie mix! This middle aged guy originally came into the Shelterâs care after the prior guardian was not providing adequate housing, resulting in the involvement of animal control. At the Shelter, Chapo has been loving playing with toys, lounging on soft bedding and interacting with staff and volunteers. Staff report that he has a bouncy demeanor. He has met some dogs at the Shelter and greets with some eager barking but interested in greeting. Chapo can be rowdy in play and may not be every dogâs cup of tea. He has lived in a home with other dogs previously without any concerns noted. Any resident dogs are required to meet prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Chapo with cats or children. A volunteer took Chapo on a sleepover and reports: `Chapo was a delight to have overnight! He was calm in the car, easy on leash, and respectful around the house. When going inside for the first time, he immediately located a couch and proceeded to snooze on it for the next several hours. If I got up, he'd trot after me, pick a new cushion, and fall right back asleep. His favorite activity, though, was easily snuggletime. This boy has an endless supply of kisses and is thrilled to share them with anyone at face level. Whoever adopts him will be lucky to find such a gentleman.` Chapo's adoption fee is sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation thanks to âLeave No One Behind fundâ â designed to adopterâs eyes towards animals who have been in the Shelterâs care a little longer than average waiting for the right adopter. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
