All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location. Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once. Sugar Plum is about 9 weeks old and is just as cute as her sister, Annie. These two girls were found out in a rural stead, huddling together. A Good Samaritan took them in but couldn’t find their owner. Sugar Plum is weary of the size difference between herself and the adult shepherds she has encountered but with her adventurous spirit, it won’t take long before she is joining in with them. Like all puppies, she plays hard and sleeps hard, each in short spurts. Sugar Plum is learning teething is for dog toys and not her human companions. The crate is a clearly a new experience and while she doesn’t love to be left alone she is learning it isn’t complete punishment, especially if her human companions are willing to stay in the same room. More to come as we get to know her. Level 2 Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
