Description

Dog Breed: Dachshund. Adoption Fee: 225. If you've always wanted you're own personal shadow in the form of a precocious sausage dog, then Poppie may be your soul mate. Poppie is a 7 year old, female, black and tan smooth coated miniature dachshund, weighing approximately 11.6 pounds, and what a sweetheart she is. Champion kisser, comes when called, playful, energetic, mostly non destructive, and quickly bonds with new people. Good around other dogs, so-so with cats, and good with adult female humans, but not sure about kids or men, however, as sweet as she is I have no doubt she would love them too. Crate training not yet attempted. She has some separation anxiety, so she might do okay if you have to leave the house and she has to be confined. Does well in the car although she likes to be in your lap. Does fine on walks. Not food aggressive. Doesn't seem interested in toys but likes bones. Downside: she is not yet house trained, even with easy access to a pet door. Doing okay with pottying outside but likes to leave her big jobs for me to find, so you'll need patience with her and frequent trips outside. She is currently on hydroxyzine for itching, and and another topical medicine for her food that is treating her for dry skin, but these may not be lifelong. Scheduled for a dental and her booster shot soon before she's ready to go.

Overview:

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
