Dog Breed: Schnauzer / Poodle (Standard). Adoption Fee: 375.00. Eboney was surrendered by family when the family moved out of state. He is a sweet and friendly guy who loves to play. He rides well in the car, enjoys going for walks, and gets along with dogs, cats, and children. Eboney is very energetic and would benefit from active owners to jog, etc. with him. A fenced backyard is required for this guy to romp and play in. As a Schnauzer&Standard Poodle mix, Eboney will grow into a strong, 50 lb. dog. Owners need to be up for the breed's physical and mental activity as well as regular grooming appts. Schnauzers/Standards typically have a 10-15 yr lifespan. Characterisitcs of the Schnauzer and Standard Poodle: Personality: sociable, intelligent, loyal, and protective, often making them good guard dogs. They are eager to please, making them highly trainable and good family companions. Activity level: high-energy requiring plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Eager for all kinds of activity, and they enjoy keeping busy. Swimming is great exercise for them, and have impulse to retrieve. Throwing toys, sticks, or balls will exercise both their mind and body. They also thrive on going for jogs or long walks with their human. Grooming: regular 4-6 week grooming appts needed to maintain coat. Brush and comb a full-coated Poodle completely to the skin or the hair will mat near the roots.

In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
