Dog Breed: Terrier. Walnut may be tiny in size, but his personality is anything but small. At just a few years old and around 10 pounds, Walnut came to us as a stray and was never reclaimed. Since moving into a foster home nearly two weeks ago, he’s been slowly learning what it means to feel safe, understood, and cared for — and it’s been beautiful to watch. Walnut is a sensitive little soul who’s figuring out the world at his own pace. He’s met smaller dogs and has been tolerant, though larger dogs can feel overwhelming for him right now. When meeting new people, Walnut sometimes puts on a brave, “tough guy” front — not because he means harm, but because he’s still learning that he no longer has to protect himself. With patience, guidance, and love, he continues to make progress every single day. What Walnut loves most is the simple joy of companionship. He enjoys peaceful walks, cozy couch snuggles, and playing outside where his surprisingly athletic side shines. He would thrive in a calm, structured home with a confident, understanding handler who can help him continue building trust and confidence. For his comfort and success, a home without young children would be best. Walnut will be getting neutered this week and will then be ready to begin his next chapter — one filled with stability, reassurance, and unconditional love. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
