Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Rita! She is a 9-pound, 1-year-old Terrier mix who was rescued from the Barstow Humane Society. One look at her gorgeous face (actively trying to kiss through the fence) and we knew she was something special. This sweet girl just wants to love and be loved and will happily hop right into your lap for hours of snuggles. Her dream is to be a true lapdog princess, spending her life right by your side. Rita is gentle, warm, and friendly, with a slightly coy and shy side that only adds to her charm. Her little snaggletooth pops out from time to time and makes her even more lovable. She is amazing with other dogs and loves kids and adults alike. Rita is a total passenger princess in the car, curling up in her comfy bed and snoozing the whole ride. She walks beautifully on a leash, enjoys easy neighborhood strolls, is doing great with potty training, and sleeps quietly through the night. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
